The most startling upset in basketball this season came Friday night when the Rappahannock Panthers defeated unbeaten Turner Ashby on the local court with a final score of 69-63. This was the second win in league play for the Panthers. The Rappahannock team was in'^rime condition, and although their opponents had them in height, they took the rebounds. Their perfect foul shots aided in attaining the six-point margin. Kent Henry of the Panthers had a high score of 32 points and held the opposing high scorer, R. Wampler, to 8 points. Wampler had been outstanding in District 10, Group II play with an average of 22 points per game. Turner Ashby led by a point at the end of the first quarter, but by half time Rappahannock had overcome TA and the score stood at 41-35 in the Panther’s favor. By the end of the third quarter Turner Ashby again had the Panthers by one point. Rappahannock chalked up 17 points in the final quarter as compared to 10 for TA, to push forward to victory. Other scoring of the Panthers was Melvin Atkins 11; Jimmy Latham 9; Bill Durden 8; Roger Atkins 8; C. E. Dodson 1. Average scoring of the top six of the Rappahannock team in play through Friday night stands as follows: Ronnie Pullen 14.6; Kent Henry 14.6; Bill Durden 6.6; Roger Atkins 6.3; Melvin Atkins 6.0; Jimmy Latham 4.6.
