Here is one in a series of releases on consumer education by Don Long of the agricultural economics department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. A one cent a day health insurance plan! That sounds like a pretty good value, doesn't it? Most of us would be glad to buy something like that. Such a plan is already in operation and each of us is automatically covered. It isn’t labeled a health insurance plan but is at least a health assurance plan. It is the USDA’s Meat Inspection Service. Meat inspection is one of the biggest health bargains of the day. All meat passing into interstate commerce must, by law, be federally inspected to insure that it is good wholesome food, safe for us to eat. Specially trained inspectors are on the lookout at all times to make sure that this is done. As a result, we are assured that most of the meat in retail stores is good whole some food, Almost 85% of all animals slaughtered for meat are slaughtered under federal inspection. Over 400,000 animals a day are inspected. In addition, 65/per cent of the processed /meats have been inspected /oy federal inspectors. / Every insurance policy, even
