Improving Efficiency

On the Farm

It used to be that some land, a willingness to work, and plenty of strong backs was about all a farmer needed to do a good job. Today, however, the strong backs are hard to^oome by—and operating efficiency is assuming great importance. G. D. Kite, agricultural engineer at Virginia Tech, has some suggestions to help improve efficiency on your farm. Handle materials as little as possible, he suggests. Locate and arrange storage of feed and supplies as convenient as possible to their place of use. If they must be moved, move them short distances. Plan movement of materials from point of origin to place of use in an orderly manner to prevent unnecessary work and travel. Avoid backtracking and duplication of effort. Handle large amounts, rather than small amounts, and make every trip count! Use conveying equipment, says Kite, to move materials when economically feasible. Electrical energy is far less costly than labor. Augers and chain conveyers can move large volumes in relatively short periods of jime. Change the form of some materials to make them less bulky and easier to handle. Much progress has been made with corn, silage and hay. Concrete pavement adjacent to silage and hay racks in dairy and cattle feeding units eliminates use of bedding material. However, the manure must be removed at certain intervals throughout the feeding period. This can be done with a tractor-mounted scraper. A manure loading ramp or tractor mounted front end loader helps get manure on the spreader. Animal.shelters for resting areas can be arranged to prevent through traffic.
