Protect Yourself and Others
Following a traffic incident in the county last week in which a single-vehicle crash resulted from mechanical failure, the Rappahannock News received several calls Asking why, with our state inspection program, are vehicles in this condition still on the highway. In this case a vital part in the front end of the car had broken and it was impossible to steer, so it veered into the opposite lane and down an embankment. X. The police officer investigating the accident, considered the aspect of improper inspection, but since the vehicle was used constantly in rough terrain and additional damage resulted from the crash and subsequent removal cf the vehicle, no definite conclusion could be reached.
It is true that too many car owners want a sticker rather than an inspection, and too many inspectors are willing to oblige. Until we as individuals rectify this situation under a more Watchful eye of administrators, our inspection program cannot fulfill its purpose to the ultimate.
Having been in the garage, business with an inspection station some years ago, we are, perhaps, more aware of the situation than many people, and cite an incident which demonstrates our point.
A car owner Went, to a garage for an inspection and when the vehicle was rejected he did not want it repaired. He refused to pay the minimum fee allowed the inspector for his time and demanded that the police be called. When the officer arrived, he found the vehicle in such deplorable condition, he would not allow it to be driven home but insisted that it be towed. However, the next day, the owner returned to the garage and purchased ten cents worth of gas to show off the rew inspection sticker acquired elsewhere.
This is an isolated case, to be aurie, nevertheless a true one. Our vehicle inspection program is for our benefit — our safety and protection. Utilize it to its fullest.
