Jim Massie's corn silage production demonstration conducted on Congaree fine sandy loam under last summers weather conditions showed an additional $8.00 worth of nitrogen gave an additional $14.00 value of ensilage @9618 plants per acre stand level and an additional $35.00 value @ a 18,922 stalks/ac stand level. Nitrogen figured at actual cost and corn silage @ $7.00/ Ton. Another demonstration on Chester loam was established with a different farmer, however this silage was harvested too green, and ahead of the date set to get an accurate measure ment, so all efforts were lost and no one benefited.
Soil and forage samples literally poured in at the office last week. While no record was kept, I feel all previous records were smashed. Good - o, this is progress keep 'em coming. To me this is a real indication farmers are taking steps towards lowering production costs.
