The deadliest July on record did away with Virginia's slim dead) reduction for the first six months of the year and sent the balance deeply Into the red as of August 1, Colonel C. W. Woodson, Chairman of the Governor’s Highway Safety Committee and Superintendent of State Police announced to day. The 106 deaths experienced in July were most nearly approached by the 93 of 1959. 1962; and 1964 respectively. They sent the toll for the first seven months to 587, to compare unfavorably with the 562 for the first seven months of 1965. At the year’s halfway mark, the total whs 481, or three less than that for the same period of 1965. Traffic volumes are about 5.6percent above those of last year. *■' Colonel Woodson noted that in recent years August has tended to replace December as the year's high-death month, both in Virginia and nationally. This was so in Virginia in 1964 and 1965, when 121 deaths were recorded for each August He went on to state that the summer weekends are particu larly dangerous and too often see in excess of 20 deaths. Speed, haste, exhaustion and . alcohol appear to be the lead ing factors, be said. Virginia*8 toll for 1965 was / 1.062, topped only by the 1,110 V of 1941.
