Soft Drink Binge
Rappahannock County residents are going for bubbly 4»»*o rages tho nan alcoholic -kindr- in .a hlg way, a survey shows. They are also spending more than ever before for these thirst quenchers. According to the latest figures, soft drinks are being downed In the local area at the annual rate of 386 eightounce bottles for every man, woman and child. That is a lot of soda pop. For the local population as a whole, soft drink consumption amounted to 1,930,000 equivalent eight-ounce bottles in the past year. This compares with a total of 1,544,000 bottles in 1960, when a similar survey was made. The rise in the five-year period was 25 percent. The findings are based upon reports issued by the Department of Commerce and by the soft drink industry. They show the relative rate of consumption throughout the country, state by state. As would be expected, the warm weather months—June, July and August-- are the biggest ones for soda pop. In those three months, people in the United States consume between one-third and onehalf of the annual total. This year, especially, with the hottest weather in a long time, the bottling plants aie going full tilt. They have been unable, in some instances, to keep up with the demand. Sales of ice cream and beer are also at a record level, the reports show.
