Essay Topic
“Why Conservation of Wildlife and other Natural Resources is of Personal Concern to Me” will serve as an inspiration for some 18,000 Virginia school children expected to submit essays on this theme for Judging in the. 20th Annual Wildlife Epsay Contest. Themtatewide competition for $3,000 in prizes is sponsored Jointly by the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries and the Virginia Division of the Izaak Walton League of America. The contest will officially open September 1, 1966, and the deadline for entries will be Jan uary 13, 1967. Students from all Virginia schools, grades 5-12, areeligi ble. Students must submit their completed essays through their school which, in turn, must submit an official entry card to become eligible Judging is on the basis of originality, effort, grammar, expression and grasp of the subject. The top award, an $800 scholarship, will go to the high school senior submitting the best essay. Lesser prizes of $5-$50 will go to the top essays in each of the 8 eligt ble grades. A panel of judges from the Virginia Game Commission, the Virginia Division of the Izaak Walton League, and the State Department of Education will make the final selections. Background materials are furnished to participating schools for use by students preparing essays. Schools in which 100 percent of the eligi ble students submit essays are recognized with special awards. There were 40 such sch ools" recognized'in lasf year's "award cuieiiiuiiies at the State Capitol.
