Scholarship Award
Dr. Burnell Pannill, chairman of the Randolph-Macon College Scholarship Committee, has announced the establishment of an award to be given in honor of the late Dr. T. McNider Simpson, Jr.
For more than 40 years Dr. Simpson was associated with Randolph-Macon as a student, professor of mathematics, dean of the college.
The scholarship award is made possible by contributions to the Scholarship Endowment Fund by members of Dr. Simpson’s family, alumni and friends of the college.
According to Dr. Pannill, the award will be given annually to a Randolph-Macon student who has “demonstrated an interest and proficiency in those areas of college life which Dr. Simpson’s own life exemplified.”
Dr. Pannill added that “emphasis will be placed upon superior academic performance, creative leadership, and catholicity of interests.” Terms of the award give particular consideration to students majoring in mathematics or the physical sciences, although the award will not be restricted to such students. 1 Nominations for the award may be made by any member of the faculty of the college prior to May 1 of each year and the award, will be made for the following academic session. Qualified awaraX winners may be nominated fon successive years.

A New Approach At
University of Va.
In an age of specialists, the University of Virginia’s School of Architecture is taking a different tack in its newest graduate program.
Last fall, the first group of students began work toward master’s degrees in planning and urban design. Of the 10 student! enrolled in the two-year program, two have degrees in government, two in civil engineering, one in biology and five in architecture.
“The interdisciplinary approach works two ways,” explained Paul S. Dulaney, chairman of the school’s city planning division. “Not only are the students’ backgrounds in a wide range of fields, but we offer courses in a number of schools within the University.”
