Edison’s Birth
Governor Mills E. Godwin, Jr. has issued a proclamation calling attention to February 11, 1967, the 120th anniversary of Thomas A. Edison’s birth. He has urged the support of the people of the Commonwealth in an effort “to multiply the talents he (Edison) represented.”
The proclamation reads:
"The inventive genius of Thomas Alva Edison has immeasurably advanced the ' ontiers of American science and the welfare of all mankind.
“In this age of limitless scientific horizens, our nation’s need for men and women inspired by his example has never been more urgent and our own Virginia science-oriented industries utilize Edison’s birthday as a focal point for their efforts to stimulate similar intensity of interest among the young people of the Commonweath.
“I, therefore, call the attention of our people everywhere to February 11, 1967, the 120th anniversary of Thomas Alva Edison’s birth and urge their appropriate support of every effort to multiply the talents he represented.”
Governor Godwin’s designation of Edison’s birthday as Science Youth Day is supported by the thinking of investor-owned utilities across the nation. Each year the Virginia Electric and Power Company sponsors tours of power stations throughout the area it serves. This year almost 2000 top high school science students will be making these tours during National Electric Week, February 6-12.
