Traffic Dangers
Noting that Labor Day week- i end is consistently the most dangerous holiday weekend of the year, Colonel C. W. Woodson, Jr., Superintendent of State Police and Chairman of I the Governor’s Highway Safety Committee, asked that the | motoring public keep this well; in mind. Last year, the Nation’s 850 deaths far exceeded those of each of the main holidays, all three-day weekends. The others were Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Christmas and New Year's Day. Virginia’s
Labor Day weekend toll j was 16, worst for that holiday since the 17 of 1962. The Nation’s set a record. Colonel Woodson said that it appears to be customary to make the weekend the last fling of summer and this desire is heightened by the imminent opening of schools and the last opportunity for families to be together on a long weekend trip until they close again. Otherwise, he noted that the same conditions exist in heightened form which make all weekends, particularly summer ones, dangerous. “We have the same old killers," he said, “alcohol, speed, haste, exhaustion, night driving and heavy traffic. “These have been brought to public attention many times before," he continued. “However, here are two pieces of advice all motorists should bear In mind.
