Highway Damage
Road damage totaling an estimated $100,000 was caused by flooding in several areas of Virginia late last week, the State Highway Department j said today. 1 Hardest hit was Fairfax County, where damage totaled approximately $25,000 to the primary system and an additional $50,000 to secondary roads. A section of L’S Route 29211 in Fairfax was blocked to j traffic Friday when rampaging waters from an ordinarily: small creek severely damaged! an 18-foot bridge. Maintenance forces worked: through the weekend on this span, and reopened it to traffic on Tuesday, August 29. A secondary road in Pittsylvania County also remained, closed to traffic today. High waters washed out a small bridge on Route 773, between Routes 794 and 799, and traffic is being detoured around the damaged section, using other roads. Thera was no immediate estimate when Route 773 will be reopened. Also included in the State’s total road damage estimate was $15,000 to secondary roads in Pittsylvania County and $10,000 to secondary routes in Loudoun County. Clean-up in Fairfax is expected to take the rest of the week, while maintenance forces in other areas expected to complete that chore today.
At the peak of the flooding iFriday, sections of more than 70 roads were blocked by high water or washouts.
