Many individuals have no • idea how many people aid in ' their treatment when they are • patients in a hospital. Now, t thanks to Medicare, people are ' becoming more aware of the i- fact that there are many peo; pie other than their nurse and . private doctor who contribute to their well-being and recovery.
One of the ways they find out is when the hospital hands I them a bill for charges not i covered by Medicare. These are generally the charges of “hospital-based physicians," that is, doctors who are employees of the hospital or who are under contract to thehos-, pital. Some examples of this type of doctor are pathologists, radiologists, or anesthesiologists. The services of these physicians are not covered by -the hospitalization part of Medicare but are covered by the supplemental medical insurance part of Medicare. The cost of the services of these “hospital-based physicians" must be specifically billed by the physician or by the hospital on his behalf. Reimbursement for the jcharges of these doctors may ;be claimed in the same way a s the costs of a patient’s lprivate doctor. A detailed explanation
