Other forest industries planted on their own lands some 5.4 million seedlings, and contributed 400 thousand free or on a matching ba s i s- to neighboring landjwners. Non-forestlandholding industries planted 385 thousand seedlings. Farmers and other small individual landowners combined to plant a total of 20.7 million young trees, of which 8.2 million were received free from forest industry. Additionally, state, federal, and municipal or county agencies put out some 2.0 million seedlings on public lands. On the basis of an estimated 650 seedlings per acre, the 55.7 million trees planted this year represents the reforestation of nearly 85,650 acres of idle agricultural land or cutover woodland. An additional 6,200 acres were reforested by direct seeding, raising the total reforestation program for the year up to almost 92,000 acres.
