Hoover stated that crime reports submitted voluntarily by law enforcement agencies throughout the country disclose violent crimes increased 18 percent as a group. Individually, these crimes show ed increases of 30 percent in robbery, 20 percent in murder aggravated assault 11 percent, and forcible rape 7 percent. The more voluminous property crimes of burglary, larceny $50 and over in value, and auto i theft rose 17 percent as a > group with auto theft up 19 i percent, burglary 18 percent and larceny 16 percent. According to the FBI Director, all cities when grouped by population size record- I ed increases. The largecities with 100,000 or more inhabitants as a group reported an average 18 percent increase. The suburban areas also reported an 18 percent rise while crime in the rural areas was up 15 percent. Mr. Hoover said the upward crime trend was consistent throughout the geographic regions of the country. The North Central States recorded a 20 percent rise, the Northeastern States 18 percent, and the Southern and Western States 16 percent. The FBI Director specifically commented on the significant increase in robbery and other street crimes. He noted a 24 percent rise in the use ; of firearms in aggravated as- ' saults and a 37 percent jump in armed robberies. Likewise, purse-snatching rose 26 percent and theft of personal property from automobiles 18 per-J cent during the six-month period.
