Many people still do not realize that cash tips are covered and are reportable for social security purposes, Mrs. Hazel F, Daly, Social Security District Manager in Winchester said today. Cash tips added to regular wages mean higher social security benefits upon retirement, death, or a disabling condition. ^ Cash tips in the Amount of $20 or more during a month in connection with an individual’s work for one employer count as wages under social security. Tips received in a form other than cash-in merchandise or services, for example — do not count a swages for social security. If cash tips amount to $20 in a month’s work for one employer, the employee must furnish the employer a written report of the amount received. The written report m ust be given his em - ployer before the 10th day after the end of the month in which cash tips are received. After the employer receives the report of the cash tips, he includes the amount reported with the regular wages! on his quarterly returns he! files with Internal Revenue.!
