The U. S. Department of Agriculture has initiated a Commodity Distribution Program in Rappahannock County with headquarters in the Lea Store building at Washington, Va. Food will be distributed to eligible low income families and those already on public assistance. USDA initiated the program after Rappahannock County, declined to operate its own program.
According to information 'V secured from the Consumer and Marketing Division of USDA, it is not mandatory that a county participate in the Commodity Distribution or Food Stamp programs, however, if a county does not wish to participate with a locally operated program, USDA will come in and instigate a federally-operated program.
Food supplies began arriving Friday and were stocked at the Lea building. Doors were officially opened Tuesday for distribution. James H. Falls of Woodville is the contractor for distribution and will be assisted by Garfield Burke, also of Woodville. C. C. Lewis of Sperryville will be the certifying agent.
