Committees appointed to study the disposition of the Washington and Sperryville Elementary School buildings and grounds were present at the July Board of Supervisors meeting Friday to discuss their findings.
Both committees recommended holding their properties for at least a year before any disposition be made of either one. They felt that the buildings might be needed for additional county office space or for school storage space since neither the new high school or new elementary school has any appreciable amount of space for storage of equipment or supplies. The possibility of needing a central garage for school buses in the future was mentioned since the dual laning of Route 211 is expected to take the present garage location. Another trend of thought was the future establishment of a vocational school.
The Washington committee felt that the ball diamond lot across from the school there might be sold, however, others felt it was needed as a recreational facility for baseball for it has been used consistently every summer by several local teams.
The Youth Group organized in Sperryville requested the use of the Sperryville School as a center for its activities. The legality of leasing the building to them was to be investigated by Mr. Davis.
The possibility of raising the old front portions of both buildings was discussed. Both were constructed in about 1908 and 1909 and will require much maintenance. The newer parts of each building and the smaller buildings at both sites could prove useful and would be much more desirable to have them under the control of the county.
