Ellis Elected Game Commission Chairman
A. Ree Ellis of Waynesboro was elected Chairman of the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries at that group’s meeting in Richmond June 21. Ralph G. Gunter of Abingdon was elected Vice-Chairman.
In other action the Commission formally reaffirmed its opposition to restrictive federal firearms legislation including the proposed federal registration of sporting arms and the licensing of owners. Commission members contend that such measures would cripple conservation programs by discouraging gun ownership and the legitimate sports of shooting and hunting. The sale of hunting licenses and excise taxes paid on sporting arms and ammunition are the sole sources of funds for state wildlife conservation and management programs, and in addition they contribute substantially to the acquisition of state lands for public outdoor recreation.
The Commission also authorized its Fish Division to proceed with plans for building a new 100-acre fishing lake in Lee County.
