2, 4-D is a safe and effective herbicide when used as recommended. It should be applied only to plants you want to kill using low pressure (30-40 pounds per square inch) equipment that will apply a wet spray (no mist) when there is no, or very little, breeze.

It is safe to use in apple orchards. Always use a low volatile form. Butal esers are more tricky - avoid using this form. Some plants and trees are more susceptible to 2, 4-D than others. Never use this chemical near tomatoes or grapes. Also, use with caution near oaks, locusts and dogwood. Some dogwoods have been known to be killed by 2, 4-D, also wisteria. Based upon my experience, I feel this , more the result of 2, 4-D being in careless hands. Rappahannock being an apple county our people are accustomed to mixing sprays at x amount of chemical per 100 gallons of water. When applying 2, 4-D to crop or pasture land, one must first determine the amount of water his sprayer is putting out per acre when driving at x miles per hour and usually a x pounds of pressure.
