Hamfest Scheduled
In Winchester
Eighteenth annual “Hamfest” of the Shenandoah Valley Amateur Radio club will be held here on Saturday and Sunday, August 3-4. The opening night’s program on August 3 will feature a banquet and dance at the Lee-Jackson restaurant and Sunday’s all-day program will take place at the Winchester National Guard Armory. George B. Ritter, W4UGX, Winchester, and Richard E. Rush, W4HXB, of Berryville, are co-chahmen of the 1968 “Hamfest.” David Maul WA4LTQ, Winchester, is chairman of the committee on prizes.
“Hamfest” Sunday will begin at 10 a.m. and the club’s members, headed by Warren Fogle, WB4DNI, Winchester, will be on hand to greet arrivals. The all-day Sunday event last year attracted some 700 amateur radio fans, their families and friends from more than a dozen states. Equipment displays will be set up In the Armory for inspection by visitors. AAMARS meeting, swap session, “gabfest” and prize drawing are a few of the activities on the day’s schedule. Top prize to be awarded Sunday afternoon, August 4, to Prize Committee chairman Maul, will be a Swan 500 C Sideband Transceiver.
A snack bar will be operated at the Armory by the local club for the convenience of visitors to the “Hamfest.” Those who bring picnic lunches, the committee points out, may eat them in the grounds of the city park nearby the Armory.
The “Hamfest” is open to anyone with an interest in amateur radio, regardless of membership in any club, sponsors of the “Hamfest” declare. There is no admission fee. The get-together of amateur radio operators in Winchester each summer has become a traditional event of the SVARC. “We look forward to an even larger group of “hams” and their friends this year than in the past,” Club president Fogle states.
