Than Their Wives?
Mow much leisure time does the average housewife in Rappahannock County have per day for resting, reading, socializing and the like compared with what her ever-loving husband enjoys in the way of free time? How do the typical working man and the typical married woman in the local area use their 24 hours each day? On the basis of a national sampling survey conducted by the Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan, and a study by the International Social Council, United Nations agency, a picture of the average Rappahannock County adult emerges.
It appears that an employed man spends nearly 8 hours of each weekday actually working and has about 3/4 of an hour on work breaks.
He requires about 20 minutes to get to work if he drives, but 40 minutes if he uses public transportation. The latest figures for the local area show that less than 2 percent of the employed people use public transportation.
Work related activities, therefore, add up to 9 2 hours a day for the average man
His wife, on the other hand, if she has no outside job, spends 5'■ hours on housework, 40 percent of it cleaning, 30 percent on coolsing and dishes, 25 percent on laundry and 5 percent on other tasks.
Added to this is the time she spends shopping, tending to the children, mending and the like.
On Sunday she spends far less time cleaning house and practically none on laundry, but she still puts in 14 hours preparing meals. i As for the employed wife, and there are approximately 240 ol them in Rappahannock County or about 25 percent of all mamec women in the local area, hei schedule is a little different.
