Stored seedlings will help fill the heavy demand for trees during the peak of the planting season and they will also be used for late season planting during the latter part of April. Seedlings are lifted and stored while dormant before: new shoot and root development j start. Trees are stored at; temperatures ranging from 30 to 36 degrees Fahrenheit and a relative humidity running from 90 to 100 percent. Trees stores under these conditions can be planted with less chance of physical damage and “heat” spoilage and offer a considerably better chance for survival. Thus the Virginia Division of Forestry is using the very latest nursery techniques to supply the very best seedlings to landowners who are reforesting land in the state.
Demand for trees from the state nurseries for reforesting cutover and open land is increasing according to Forester Vernam. Site preparation and planting of recently cutover timberland has increased greatly [with nearly 10,000 acres of land jbeing prepared by drum chopping, discing or control burning for planting this spring. It is estimated that 80 percent of all of the trees planted in the state this year will be on prepared sites.
