Forestry Has New
Nursery in Progress
Beginning with the 1969 spring plantin.g season Virginia landowners should receive their tree seedlings for reforestation projects more promptly, closer to requested delivery dates and trees should arrive fresher and in better condition for planting which should aid in obtaining better planting survival rates according to forester William C. Vernam of the Virginia Division of Forestry.
Forester Vernam reports that the Virginia Division of Forestry has established a new forest tree nursery at the Augusta Forestry Center near Crimora in Augusta County and that this nursery will be shipping trees this spring and supplying landowners in the Charlottesville, Salem, Staunton and Abington Districts of ''the Virginia Division of Forestry. White pine and desirable hardwood seedlings will be grown at this nursery and production is planned for 12 to 15 million plantable trees per year. This, along with the New Kent Nursery production cji 40 to 50 million seedlings, will provide enough trees to reforest 75,000 acres per year.
Cold storage buildings have also recently been constructed at the Augusta and New Kent facilities with a combined capacity for storing close to 6 million seedlings. Cold storage enables the nurseries to lift seedlings during favorable weather and tc
