Highway Dept. Seeks
College Graduates
Recruiters for Virginia’s Department of Highways are going to college campuses throughout the Southeast this winter and spring, telling seniors that after graduation there’s a place for many of them in the State’s busy highway development program. Before they complete their assignment, the recruiters will have visited some 30 campuses, including six in Virginia.
They are seeking approximately 40 civil engineering graduates for the Department’s graduate engineer training program, and 20 young people with degrees in such fields as economics, business administration and real estate for training as right-of-way-agents. In addition to the four-year schools, the recruiters will pay visits to each of Virginia’s I community colleges now turning out graduates. There, they will be [looking for students with backgrounds in drafting, design, I civil engineering and architectural technology.
Particularly in the case of young engineers, the Department will be competing with some of the nation’s largest industries and other state and federal government agencies. If past years’ experience is a reliable indicator, the Virginia recruiters will return with almost -- but not. quite - as many graduates as they had hoped to employ.
