Make a joyful noise. Last week Deppity Festus Hagen was taking a prizner to Dodge City. On their way the deputy had to stop by a ranch house to treat his prisoner’s wound. The prisoner observed that the rancher’s wife didn’t ^eem happy, that a ‘happy Woman hums while she is Cookin’.’
Mama’s kitchen seemed to be a j happy place. She sang a lot while she was cooking for us young uns. And boy, could she cook fluffy biscuits. She had to cover them up after taking them from the oven to keep them from just floating out into the air. I was a puny kid - the runt of the family. I stayed around the house and helped mama in the kitchen. I would bring in the stove wood for the big old hungry range and any other chores she would assign to me. When she would sing a song I knew I would join right in, 1 could squall with the best. Some said I should be a hog caller.
Well, later in life I had a buddy who was the District Forester in that area.
