A military aircraft crashed into a mountainside in Rappahannock County last Thursday morning nand exploded, killing its two occupants. The Navy jet, an A6A Intruder attached to Attack Squadron 35 at Oceana, plunged into the cloud covered mountain just below Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. Sperryville residents heard the crash about 9 a.m. after seeing the jet on its low level mission pass over the village.
The plane exploded when it struck the mountain, hulling out a crater and scattering wreckage over a ten-acre tract. The explosion started some small fires which were brought quickly under control by Park Rangers.
