The Virginia Regional Medical Program (VRMP) is a federally financed program established by Congressional action in 1965, when a Presidential Commission revealed that heart disease, cancer and stroke accounted for around 70 percent of all deaths that occur in the United States each year; and that the rapidly expanding medical knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases was not being disseminated and applied uniformly throughout the country’s health care system.
