Purebred Boar
Nets Record $1200
Courtiand - History was made in the Virginia pork industry here on April 2 when a performance tested Duroc boar sold for a record $1200. This is the highest price ever paid for a purebred hog in Virginia.
The boar was bred by F. S. Cittenden of Hardyville and was sold to Oscho Deal, a North Carolina purebred Duroc breeder. The boar was named F. C. 109 because it took him only 109 days to reach 200 pounds in the VP I Extension Service Swine Performance Testing Program. The animal had just one inch of backfat at 200 pounds and examination by sonoray showed over five square inches of loin eye.
This sale was a joint production sale of F. S. Crittenden, Durocs; R. S. Ellis IV, Yorkshires; and Randall Updike, Hampshires. The Ellis herd is located at Buckingham and the Updike herd at Washington.
T en Duroc boars averaged $321.50, 10 Yorkshire boars averaged $247.50 and one Hampshire boar sold for $230. Averages for open gilts were $105 for six Hampshires, $101.75 for 10 Yorkshires and $81.07 for seven Durocs, said Dr. C. R. Cooper, Extension swine specialist at Virginia Tech.
Cooper added that the sire of this record-selling boar holds the feed ‘efficiency record in the Tennessee testing program and the grand sire holds the feed efficiency record for the Iowa testing program.
