Rappahannock County farmers received $31,327 in cost-shares under the Agricultural Conservation Program (ACP) in 1968 for carrying out necessary soil and water conservation practices, according to the Annual Report just released by the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation office.
This amount compares with $37,82 1 earned in ACP cost-shares in the county in 1967 and $35,988 in 1966.
The money was paid to county farmers for such items as establishing permanent cover, improving permanent cover, liming farmland, contour strip-cropping, forest tree planting, forest improvement, building farm ponds, controlling shrubs with chemicals, wildlife cover and winter cover.
The largest amounts paid to farmers in 1968 were $20,335 for improving permanent cover and $4,281 for establishing additional permanent cover.
The ACP and other agricultural programs are administered in Rappahannock County by a county committee made up of three farmers. This committee keeps farmers informed about the ACP program, reviews crop allotments, and gives advice and suggestions to farmers as well as aid in making program recommendations to the State committee.
