three fire trucks and a police car. We stopped in Des Moines for supper and drove by the Capitol building. We crossed the Des Moines River and as we continued on our way we saw lots of windmills pumping water to irrigate the land.
We crossed the Great Sioux River into Omaha, Nebraska where we saw lots of tall buildings and many modem architectural buildings. We arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Sevalesda, the father and mother-in-law of James. It was a lovely home and we spent the night there then left the next morning, Thursday, for Denver.
There was the Platte River and on our way saw lots of lakes and mountains with no trees. We crossed the North Platte River, went into Colorado and an hour later crossed the South Platte River which was almost flooding over the bridge.
I saw the way tumble weeds grow as we crossed the prairies; also saw large reservoirs for water storage and passed stock pens containing a thousand or so head of cattle. There were quite a few small pens of a hundred or so head. We arrived in Denver and I got to play with my friends Randy and Gordon Dodson.
Friday we visited the Denver Museum where I saw lots of interesting things, and Saturwe visited Rock Canyon outdoor theatre. We also visited Mother Cabrin’s Shrine and further up the mountain we saw Buffalo Bill’s grave and a museum on Lookout Mountain. We also saw Central City. (We includes James Hackley, his son and daughter and Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Burner and daughter Faye of Amissville with whom I would return to Virginia.) I don’t think I will ever forget this trip. We’re having an awful good time. We went through a lot of tunnels and saw a lot of gold mines where people were panning for gold. We stopped in the Silver Slipper Saloon and were entertained by a country band. Then we visited Teller House where we heard an 86 year-old man relate the narrative of the Face on the Floor in the Bar Room.
Sunday, June 22 the Burners and I left for'home. We passed a lot of dried up creeks and ravines in Colorado. In Flagler, Colo, we stopped and went to church at the Flagler Baptist Church. After lunch we passed right through Salina, Kan. where a tornado had hit that morning. It really did a lot of damage. We Went doWfi in Abilene to the Eisenhower Center and saw his home town and his grave.
We went through the capital city of Kansas, Topeka, on to Kansas City, then into Missouri
