Miss Ruby Lee Compton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Compton of Castleton, became the bride of Robert Lee Turner June 28, 1969. He is the son of Mrs. Susie Turner Cockrill of Rixeyville and the late Mr. Turner.
The ceremony was performed at three o’clock Sunday afternoon in the Massanova Penecostal Church with the Rev. Archie Clatterbuck officiating. Miss Eunice Wharton of Castleton provided the music.
The bride was given in marriage by her uncle Charles Compton of Castleton. Her long white gown was lace over taffeta and she carried a bouquet of carnations.
Miss Peggy Smith of Amissville was maid of honor and James Stringfellow of Washington, Va. acted as best man.
A reception followed at the couple’s future home in Rixeyville where they are living after a short wedding trip.
Some of Battle’s positions on the issues:
1. More consumer representation in state government.
2. Retention of the state sales tax. Although Battle regrets burdens upon the taxpayer, he feels that the sales tax is necessary if Virginia is to provide adequate services to her citizens.
3. Retention of Virginia’s right to work law. Battle feels the right to work law in Virginia has actually helped labor. This is because the existence of the law attracts industry;
4. Opposition to gun control jlegislation. Battle would leave this! i matter to the localities.
These are only a few of the I many positions Bill Battle has1 taken over the course of the campaign. In general Battle’s philosophy is one of pragmatic problem-solving. Battle, more than any of the candidates, seems to have avoided identification with specific economic and political interests. Whether Virginia is ready for the middle of! the road is the question his* candidacy will resolve.
