William C. Battle
William C. Battle, age 48, is presently an attorney in Charlottesville, Virginia. The son of former Governor John S. Battle, he is considered by many political analysts to be the front runner in the coming primary election. His philosophy, more than that of the other gubernatorial candidates, approximates the middle of the road.
In 1960 Battle managed the presidential., campaign of his wartime friend, John F. Kennedy, in Virginia. Following Kennedy’s election, Battle was appointed ambassador to Australia. There Battle acquired valuable experience in the field of executive administration.
In 1966 Battle managed the successful Senatorial campaign of Sen. William B. Spong, Jr. of Portsmouth against U. S. Senator Willis Robertson of Lexington. It is with the Spong-moderate faction of the state Democratic Party that Battle has been most closely associated through the years. Indeed, Battle’s philosophy is of such a nature that he has received support from every faction of the Democratic Party. For example, in one Southside Virginia county Battle has two Ico-campaign managers. One was the manager of A. Willis Robertson’s 1966 senatorial bid; while the other was the campaign manager of William Spong, who wa» Robertson’s younger, and more liberal, challenger.
