So starting in a seemingly aimless fashion, branches were lapped and overlapped like courses of shingles until the mound appeared as a large hay cock or if imagination were really cut loose, like a huge thatched hut straight out of the African veldt with a pigmy or two hiding inside.
Oh yes, the sermon in the church yard-it was discovered in a second fallen tree, a tall soft maple. Lying there it seemed the picture of health, rich in its green; lush in its foliage; and stately with its arch of spreading branches -but rotten, completely rotten inside. The Good Book, in 1st Samuel says-“Man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.”
The self appointed task had been completed, the way to the church was clear; the doors of the church would be open and preaching would be heard Sunday morning, but the efforts of the three old woodsmen had brought them an early blessing-they had seen the sermon in the church yard on Tuesday.
