District Manager, Social Security Administration, stated today that inquiries received recently indicate that there are some misconceptions as to procedures and requirements for filing.
The questions relate to payment for services covered by the supplementary medical insurance-the part that helps pay for doctor’s bills, outpatient hospital services, other medical services and supplies, and home health services.
It appears that the public is not aware of a change in the law which was effective in 1968, Mrs. Crumpton said. Prior to that time, the patient was required to pay the doctor or supplier and submit the receipted bills. This created a hardship for many people with limited incomes, who often found it necessary to borrow money to pay the medical bills. Realizing this problem, Congress amended the law. Now, the patient can file a claim and receive payment even though the bill has not been paid. All that is necessary is that he attach to his claim an itemized statement from his doctor. Then payment will be made directly to the patient.
