growth. The widening of Highway No. 211 and U S. ■ 17 from 1-95 to Warrenton will provide convenient transportation arteries from Rappahannock County to every area of Northern Virginia. Route 211 will actually become the most direct route from the Washington, D. C. area to the Valley of Virginia. The installation of mass transit systems in the Washington suburbs will shorten commuting distance for city workers. Thus one can conlude that the completion of the construction of these transportation arteries will result in population increases in Rappahannock County.
Another basis for population projections is a study of population growth trends in adjacent and similarly situated areas The counties of Clarke, Madison, Orange and WarTen, all considered similar to Rappahannock, have experienced continual population growth over the last two decades The adjoining counties of Page, Culpeper and Fauquier have experienced similar growth patterns.
On a purely mathematical basis, one might well predict only slight population increases in Rappahannock County for years to come. Past experience, however, has shown that such methods of forecasting are often inadequate. Indeed, population forecasts, because they must eliminate or guess at unknown factors, are virtually always conservative.
