Soc. Security Notes

Medicare benefits are payable at 65 even if a person continues to work full time and is not collecting his social security benefits “People nearing 65, whether or not they plan to retire, should visit the social security office at 20 South Cameron Street,” Mrs. Hazel F. Crumpton, social security district manager, said today. It is important, she noted, to apply during the 3 months before you turn 65 to be sure that your Medicare protection will begin as soon as you reach 35. Otherwise, you may lose coverage of some of your medical bills. Mrs. Crumpton explained that Medicare is divided into two narts. “One part is hospital insurance,” she said. “This is paid from social security contributions nade during your working ifetime. Virtually every employed person now reaching 35 is eligible for and has paid for lospital insurance protection. \nd if a worker is eligible, so is lis wife at age 65. This part of Medicare helps pay or your care in a hospital and for certain kinds of care you may leed after you leave the hospital. “But that is only half of the dedicare story,” she continued. ‘The other half is the upplementary medical insurance hat helps pay doctors’ and urg eons’ bills and a wide variety >f other medical expenses. You >ay half the cost of the Medical nsuranee through a premium of 34 a month. The government >ays the other half. It is >articularly important that you ipply for your medical insurance coverage before you reach 65 since this is a voluntary program with limited enrollment periods,” Said Mrs. Crumpton. Mrs. Crumpton said doctor bills were the main medical expense covered by this insurance. However, she added, medical insurance under Medicare covers many other medical services and supplies. These range from home health care visits to ambulance service and the rental or purchase of durable medical equipment.
