Conservation Rep.

H. Laurence Manwaring has been appointed by the Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District to represent Rappahannock County. Mr. Manwaring owns and operates an 1100 acre farm near Woodville, Va., where he raises Hereford and Charolais cattle.

Mr. Manwaring, a native of Utah, is a former teacher of Agriculture at Maroii Agricultural College at Hastings, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand. He is also a former employee of the U. S. Department of Agriculture, where in 1955 he received the Distinguished Service Award for his work with the Committee system. Mr. Manwaring, a 1936 graduate of George Washington University, is also a member of the Soil Conservation Society of America.

In 1963 the Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District presented Mr. Manwaring with its Certificate of Award “In recognition of Outstanding Achievements in Soil and Water Conservation”.

The primary purpose of the Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District is to provide citizens with a voice in determining how their natural resources will be used. Members serve without pay.

Economic Data

In recent years the agricultural work force in Rappahannock County has shown a significant decrease. In 1940 agricultural employment in Rappahannock amounted to 1,346 individuals; in 1950 it had dropped to 1,090 persons; and by 1960 it was only 660. In other words, the farmer at the beginning of this decade found himself competing for a work force that approached only 49% of that for which he competed in 1940.

In 1960 Rappahannock County had 1,287 families within its borders. These families had a median income of $2,903. Fifty-one and eight-tenths percent of all these families had incomes of under $3,000.

In 1960 the average number of school years completed by every adult in Rappahannock County was seven years.
