Return from Alaska

and West Coast

Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Latham, son Cliff, Mrs. A. C. Latham of Amissville and Mrs. Harold Carder of Culpeper have returned from a trip to Alaska and California.

Leaving Dulles Airport by plane they went first to Anchorage, Alaska where they were guests of Lieut, and Mrs. Robert Armentrout at Elmandorf Air Force Base.

After a couple days of sightseeing including “Portage Glacier” and the huge icebergs there, also “Earthquake Park” which was just as the 1964 quake had left it, (with the exception of the removal of buildings and debris) Mrs. A. C. Latham and Mrs. Harold Carder flew to San Francisco where they were met by and visited with, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Smiley and son Bob of Oakland before going on to Yuba City where they spent some time with Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Anderson and family, Mr. and Mrs. D. G. Foster and family and Mr. Aubrey Anderson, Mrs. Latham’s brother who will celebrate his 93rd birthday in December.

Mr. Anderson, whose health is much improved after a slight stroke in the early spring went with them to his ranch near Maxwell, also visited the cemetery where Mrs. Anderson was buried and another where Mr. Phil Latham was laid to rest.

While in Yuba City they were entertained at several family picnic dinners, also did sightseeing at Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake, Reno, Nevada and Virginia City. In Virginia City they learned from a shopkeeper how it came to be called “Virginia City” - an old man who had been drinking heavily and was quite unsteady, fell and broke his bottle. As he got up he said, “ I christen thee Virginia.”

The following week the J. R. Latham family came down from Alaska and were met in San Francisco and entertained by the Smiley’s. Following some sightseeing they drove to Yuba City the next day and another family get-together picnic was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. G. Foster with the Latham’s going later to the J. W. Anderson home.
