high school equivalency certificate; qualify for admission to college or advanced educational opportunities; meet educational requirements for employment or promotion; satisfy educational qualifications for induction to the United States Armed Forces; and meet regulations of State and local boards of licensing examiners for admission to licensing examinations for occupations requiring educational competence at the ninth, tenth, or eleventh grade level.
Certificates may be issued to civilian and military personnel who meet the following requirements: An applicant must be at least 20 years of age. Under circumstances considered justifiable by local school authorities, the age limit may be lowered; however, no applicant may take the tests prior to the time that he would have graduated from high school had he remained in school and made normal progress. A person under 20 years of age must have earned at least eight units of high school credit, excluding health and physical education, to be eligible to take the GED tests.
Applicants also must either be permanent residents of Virginia or have resided in the State six months prior to applying for testing.
