Miss Merie Ellyn Fong, daughter of U. S. Senator and Mrs. Hiram Fong of Hawaii, will be Queen of the 43rd Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester on April 30, May 1 and 2. Ben B. Dutton, Jr., president of the Festival, and Mrs. Robert C. Burkholder, director of the fete’s Queen and Court Department, announced the selection of the Apple Blossom Queen. Miss Fong, who will be 22 years old on April 17, is a senior at Goucher College, Baltimore, Md.
will receive her degree in June. Her hobbies indude water skiing, sewing-“on!y summer clothes,” she says-and photography. She has been sampling snow skiing! this winter but laughingly admits she is quite new to this sport. The Queen-elect has three brothers, Hiram, Jr., 31; Rodney, 26, and Marvin, 21.
Miss Fong will be making a second appearance at the Festival. She rode in the Grand Feature parade in 1968 on the Hawaii float, entered that year by the Hawaii State Society of Washington, D. C. She will be the Festival’s second Queen from Hawaii. Just ten years ago, in 1960, the year after Hawaii’s admission to the union, Miss Yvonne Mendonca of Honolulu was Queen Shenandoah 33rd. Coronation ceremonies for Miss Fong, the Apple Blossom Queen-elect, will be held at the Handley Bowl on Thursday, April 30, at 2:30 p.m. Senator and Mrs. Fong are expected to come from Washington for their daughter’s coronation. After the Queen has received her crown, she and members of her Court, plus a vast audience of visitors, will view the Pageant of Springtime, “Love Makes the World Go ’Round”, with a cast of 1200.
