There was a great deal of interest concerning a bill to prohibit the use of games, contests lotteries, and schemes whereby persons receive gifts or prizes for the purpose of advertising a product or service. This bill was introduced on behalf of the Virginia Gasoline Retallen Association and was opposed by the Virginia Pood Dealers Association and the Retail Merchants Association. It has been referred to a subcommittee for further study.

February 16 was the last day for the introduction of bills except for those requested by the Governor or filed by unanimous consent. A total of 1120 bills and 72 resolutions were introduced in the House and 493 bills and 33 resolutions in the Senate.

The Appropriations Committee is still studying the budget and i will probably report it to the House of Delegates sometime this . week. It is faced with the difficult problem of balancing the budget. Governor , Holton’s proposed tax increases , on cigarettes and liquor would [ only produce an additional $42, million.
