One of the most efficient hay converts in the world is the Holstein cow. The number of dairy cows in the U. S. continues to decrease while milk production continues to meet the demand of a growing population. And the big black and white, Holstein cows can take a lot of the credit.
How did the Holstein win thit pre-eminence? Possibly there is s lesson here for the beef cattleman. For not too long ago it was a four way race to see which breed would take over the leadership of the dairy industry. It could just as easily have been the milking Shorthorn. But while other breeders became side tracked on selecting breeding stock based on the curve of their horns, dish of the face, color pattern and pedigree, the Holstein breeders stuck doggedly to selection, based on milk production. The volume of milk that a cow could efficiently produce pretty much determined the size and shape of the breed.
The future of the beef industry is going to be based on production records. And beef producers who will still be raising beef in the future will be basing their replacement selection on these production records.
