By the end of April, mo6t Virginia wildlife species will have young although many of the young animals will still be in dens or nests to show up more prominently in May. Earliest to begin the production cycle is the black bear whose cubs are born in January or February and by this time should be ambling actively around the woods. Young otters should also be venturing into the great outdoors following birth in February or March. Most squirrels have young in the den or nest that will emerge actively next month.
Foxes already have litters of kits in their dens that should begin to show up later this month. Ruffed grouse are courting and beginning their nesting activities which will see broods coming out by June. Young raccoons and rabbits are also born in dens or nests during the month and venture out by May.
