Today the outlook oq stuttering is changed. Speech pathologists now feel that stuttering can be eliminated from a person’s speech pattern. One of the first major breakthroughs in stuttering management came in the mid 1960’s, when a researcher named Goldiamond successfully produced normal speech in stuttering subjects. The method used under laboratory conditions was similar to what is known as delayed auditory feedback. In all

speech was produced over the modes of oral conversation, monologue, and reading. Further work in other universities and laboratories produced the programs now in wide use in speech clinics. Among the techniques for establishing fluency are the DAF (delayed auditory feedback) approach, the use of positive and negative! reinforcement, a prolongation program, and desensitization programs for young children..

All stuttering programs basically include three phases: (1) an establishment phase, where fluent speech is clinically stabalized; (2) a transfer phase, in which the new speech pattern is gradually transferred to outside speaking situations; (3) during the maintenance phase, the individual maintains fluency on his own with occasional clinical checks.
