Warren and Rappahannock public schools are now using highly successful programs for articulation and stuttering correction. These programs are based on behavior modification.
Stuttering is a behavior. Stuttering is something a person does to his speech; it is not something that happens uncontrollably. If stuttering is then a behavior, it follows that it can be controlled and changed like any other form of behavior. Through the numerous programs being used at major university clinics, it is now being proven that the “stutterer" can have a completely normal speech pattern. The basic goal of all methods is to set up a fluent speaking pattern while decreasing the number of dysfluencies.
For centuries the malady of stuttering or stammering has had stigmas attached to it. Stuttering has created fear and disgrace; it was thought by some to be contagious; it was an evil “thing” inside a person.
