Recognition of
Vol. Firemen Urged
Washington-Rep. John O. Marsh, Jr., has joined in Congressional sponsorship of a resolution authorizing and requesting the President to designate September 19-26 National Volunteer Firemen’s Week.
“It. seems appropriate that there be a national recognition of the service of these important community protection organizations, ” Marsh said; “and, .ore important, that active attention be given to the growing problems of maintaining the volunteer fire departments at maximum efficiency’’.
“Inflation has hit these organizations heavily in the area of equipment costs at a time when population growth is increasing sharply the fire-protection responsibilities of volunteer departments, particularly in the sprawling residential areas of outer suburbia,” he noted. The 7th District Congressman has been active in behalf of additional federal assistance for volunteer fire departments and rescue squads and is the sponsor of legislation which would give these organizations a priority in obtaining surplus government equipment.
