Spring turkey hunters will And three additional counties open to them this year in the three week 1970 spring gobbler season, which is otherwise nearly identical to last year’s, reports Game Commission Executive Director Chester F. Phelps. The new counties to be open during the April 18 through May 9 season are Prince Edward, Louisa and Goochland. Closed counties include Spotsylvania, Buckingham, King and Queen, King William, Lee, Scott, Wise, Dickenson, Russell and Buchanan plus private lands in Highland and Caroline. Hunting is permitted from one half hour before sunrise until 11 a.m. each day, prevailing time.
Only bearded turkeys are legal game during the three week season, which includes four Saturdays. Electronic callers, live decoys, dogs and organized drives are prohibited. Only one turkey may be taken in any one day, and hunters must use tabs from their 1969-70 big game license.
During a similar three week season last year, hunters bagged a record total of 1,453 gobblers. Wythe, Augusta, Prince William, Fauquier, Dinwiddle and Bath were the top six counties ir spring kill last year. Wfth a record fall kill already on the books, the spring success is expected to be good although many of the abundant young gobblers may not be sporting visible beards this spring, and therefore may not lawfully be killed.
