Park Visitation Low
Visitation to Shenandoah National Park was considerably reduced over the Memorial Day weekend, even though the weather was good, Superintendent R. Taylor Hoskins said. Only 35,809 visitors entered the Park during the 3-day holiday, a 17% reduction from last year.
The travel was 5% below the average for the last five years, during which fewer visitors were noted only in 1967.
No reason for the decline is evident since all facilities were open and the campgrounds and concessioner accommodations were crowded. Possibly the national unrest and the erratic stockmarket had some effect.
