You also inquired about our schedule for the construction of Route 66 from Front Royal to Gainesville. There are a number of factors that contribute to the present uncertainties in establishing advertisement dates. Legislation now pending in Congress will determine to a great extent the pace of future projects. Constantly rising construction costs, changing highway design and safety standards, and environmental considerations also complicate the picture.

About the best guest that I can give you at this time for the advertisement of the sections of Interstate 66 between Route 340 and Route 29 near Gainesville is during the period 1972-73.

I regret very much that I cannot be more optimistic, but this is our most realistic appraisal at this time.

We do appreciate your continuing interest in our mutual highway endeavors.

Sincerely,

Douglas B. Fugate
